Context

The goal here is to establish a hotel for our JAM brand. The project was the subject of a competition won by the consortium with Nelson as the hotel partner. The site is located a stone's throw from Citadelpark, the arts district (with many museums nearby) and student housing, on the site of a former Belgian Army barracks. Our intention here is to be part of a multifunctional project (housing, art school, artist workshops, hotel, parking, multipurpose areas and offices).

Process and challenges

The aim is to build an economically viable hotel, while preserving the authenticity of the building and giving thorough attention to the heritage constraints. The challenge is how to best harmonize a very mixed-purpose site. This project was implemented with a circular vision, in particular by optimizing the material resources available on site. It does not use fossil fuels; we have chosen instead to install a heating and cooling system via an Air/Water heat pump.

Results

A conscious and cheerful hotel, with 108 rooms, a rooftop bar and a restaurant/bar concept on the ground floor.
